Introduction - Gait analysis
has been used extensively in research laboratories for a number of decades (e.g.
Bresler and Frankel 1950; Murray 1967; Simon et al. 1977). However, the use
of cine film for kinematic studies is laborious, so that routine clinical studies
have generally been restricted to simple measurements of cadence, velocity,
and foot contact. The recent introduction of television-based systems has greatly
reduced the time taken to analyse kinematic data and enabled combined kinetic/kinematic
studies to be performed on a routine basis for clinical assessment.
